Gameschooling Activities for Early Learners

Homeschool Articles and Advice

Desiree Robinson of the Flourish Homeschool Collective

Kids naturally play, and they naturally learn in doing so. It shouldn’t stop once they start school. It should continue that way so your child can grow a love for learning that will bless them for a lifetime.

One of my favorite ways to nurture a love for learning within my kids is to Gameschool. Gameschooling simply means homeschool learning activities through games.

Let’s dive into some fun options for each subject from preschool- elementary.

Language arts:

Having a solid foundation of the alphabet letters and phonics is our primary focus, then we move onto words, and reading.

Preschool

Letter matching cards, Letter Puzzles, Singing the ABC’s

Kindergarten

Rhyming games, Playdough letter mats, Alphabet Slap (pick a different letter to slap for each round, similar to slap jack)

Elementary

I spy something with the letter A, Letter Scavenger hunts, Scrabble board game

Math:

First I focus on numbers 1-100, addition, then subtraction, and then multiplication.

Preschool

Number matching Cards, Number puzzles, Counting measurements while cooking

Kindergarten

Search and find number books (like the 1001 bugs to find book), Sum swamp board game, Magnatile connect and count

Elementary

Bingo, Snap it up card game, Balloon bounce and count

Science:

Science is such an easy one, even going to the beach we enjoy science lessons!

Preschool

Cooking, Baking, Nature walk and journalling

Kindergarten

Science experiments, Playdough/ Clay creations, Legos

Elementary

Bird bingo, Human body anatomy puzzle, Dissection

Social studies:

I primarily believe in starting from the beginning of creation and moving our way up to the present.

Preschool

Creation matching cards, Noah’s animal rescue board game, Family devotionals

Kindergarten

Bible history stencil coloring, Ancient civilizations musical chairs, Bible history puzzles

Elementary

Bible bingo, Ten commandments hot potato, History hopscotch

Life skills/Handicrafts:

These can be often neglected, but are very valuable. From learning about the responsibilities of life, to emotional regulation, and even learning our interests, life skills are definitely a must for our family.

Preschool

Cooking, Baking, The ground is Lava Clean up

Kindergarten

Homemade Skincare & Medicine, Knot tying, Guess the emotion game

Elementary

Sewing, Woodworking, Origami

This is not an exhaustive list, but it will definitely get you started with some of our family's favorites!

Whether you use board games, or even make up a game, learning through playing games is not only a great way to help your children learn, but a lovely family bonding experience that is easy for every family member to enjoy.
