My best tip: Check thrift stores often. We have probably gotten at least half our games from thrift stores and have gotten some amazing deals. Like, $50 (very popular) games for just a couple bucks sort of deals. ~ Ashley

Making Fractions Simple

A Better Way to Help Kids Learn

Teaching fractions can be a real challenge. Many students get mixed up with all the rules, and it can be hard to know what to do when you’re stuck. But there’s a simple way to make fractions easier to understand—by using the Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract (CPA) method.

A Story About Fractions

I remember working with a 7th grader who was having trouble with fractions, especially when trying to turn mixed numbers into improper fractions (you might know them as “top-heavy” fractions). She had learned the rule in class but couldn’t remember it while she was doing her homework.

Instead of just giving her the rule again, I asked her to draw pictures of the fractions. Guess what? She figured out the rule by herself! Now, she remembers both the rule and the meaning, and she feels more confident.

Why the CPA Method Works

The CPA method is effective because it takes students through three steps. First, they start with concrete objects or drawings they can see and touch. Next, they use pictures to represent those objects. Finally, they move on to the abstract symbols and rules, which make more sense now that they understand the concept.

This approach helps students because they’re not just memorizing, they are learning what fractions mean! When they understand the meaning, they’re less likely to get confused by the rules. And, this solid understanding prepares them for more advanced math like algebra.

The CPA Method

  • Concrete: Start with real objects students can touch, like fraction tiles or everyday items like fruit slices.
  • Pictorial: Move on to drawing pictures of the fractions. This helps students see the problem and understand the relationships between different fractions.
  • Abstract: Finally, use the symbols and rules we use in math to represent fractions.

Using these steps, students can develop a deep understanding of fractions. They won't just be memorizing rules that don’t mean anything to them. Instead, they'll have a solid foundation that prepares them for more complex math like algebra.
