The $8 Bag of Ladybugs That Changed How My Kids Learn
A several years ago I ordered a bag of 1,500 live ladybugs off Amazon for about eight dollars. I figured my kids would think they were cool for an afternoon.
They studied them for months.
One daughter got so obsessed with insects that she started talking about becoming an entomologist. Another one pivoted to birds, spending weeks learning calls, sketching feathers, and building a little field journal. Then somehow the bugs led to the garden, because of course they did. Ladybugs eat aphids, aphids eat plants, plants need pollinators. One question kept leading to the next. Before long we had kids who wanted to learn, not because I assigned it, but because they couldn't stop being curious.
That's the kind of learning that's hard to manufacture. But every once in a while, something comes along that sparks it.
